What is feedburner?

Feedburner is a syndicating service. Most blogging platforms come with something called an RSS or an ATOM feed. This allows for people to be able to view posts from your blog without actually having to go to it. This feed can be put on Feedburner in order to

  • Get a better feed that offers its readers a choice of feed readers, bookmarking options, etc..
  • Lets you see how many people are suscribed to your blog and how often they find your posts interesting enough to actually go to your blog
  • Lets you add adsense ads at the end of your posts directly from the feed
  • Allows you to syndicate , and therefore advertise, your blog post summaries on other websites such as myspace.

How do I get a Feedburner feed?

  1. Create an account (this is totally free)
  2. Sign in
  3. Put in your blog's URL in the "Burn a feed" box
  4. Feedburner will then look for any feeds on your url. If there are more than one it'll ask you to choose. It really doesn't matter that much which you pick but if given a choice I like to pick RSS 2.0. You have the choice of changing your new feedburner feed url if you want.
  5. You will automatically be signed up for feed stats. However if you want more statistics click "Next" and you will be asked if you want extra features. (PS. Pro features are now free)
  6. You will then be redirected to a page that will ask you what blog hosting service you use. Each of these has full instructions on what to do

Letting your readers suscribe

Well now that you have a feed you should let people use it.

  1. (Assuming you're logged in). Go to the PUBLICIZE tab
  2. Go to Chicklet chooser
  3. Use one of the standard feed icons. It's better this way.

Now there are two ways of integrating this.

Either you can copy the html code that is given at the bottom of the page and paste it into the sidebar/widgets section of your blog or...

You can pick your blogging platform and use the auto-system they have (for blogger and typepad only)

Doing either of these will put a Suscribe to RSS icon on your blog's sidebar.

If you have a weird blogging platform that doesn't allow a customizable sidebar, but does allow html in pages, then you can put your Suscribe button's html code in your About page.

What next?

  • Show off how many subscribers you have. (Publicize - > Feedcount).
  • Offer email subscriptions (Publicize - > Email Subscriptions)
  • Use the Headline rotator or the Springwidgets or Buzzboost to display your feed on other websites. All of these are in Publicize.
  • In Optimize, make sure Smart Feed is activated. It ensures that your feed will work on most/all feed readers.
  • Choose the extra options (bookmark, comment, digg,etc...) available for your readers in Optimize: Feedflare.
  • Go to Optimize: Summary Burner if you don't want your whole post to be syndicated but simply want a summary that'll make readers yearn for more.
  • In the Analyze tab you can opt to have site stats on Feedburner. It's a simpler stat reported than Google analytics but sometimes simpler is better.

Thanks for the great hub Squimpleton . You make a great point about getting your content to interested readers. I would like to comment on one more very important feature of online success: A very good web hosting company that excels with SEO tactics!

If your readers have a website, i recommend Site Build It. They help you build your content pages right from the get go and believe me, it's worth every cent to get that support than to rebuild everything you did WRONG. For one, no traffic and you are a speck of sand on a mile of beach of a deserted island!! So why bother writing at all, right?

For everyone of your readers that wants SOMEONE to read their stuff, there's search engine optimization (SEO) and the proper tactics that get your little place in space discovered. For more I offer http://www.netrageouz.net/toolbox.htm where I post dozens & dozens of resources of interest to anyone that is ready to set up a little sweet spot in the virtual universe. Great hub!!

@prems4u. I think I mentioned that there is a feature on Feedburner that gives a content summary instead of the full content. I know you only want an hyperlink, but if your readers get a glimpse of what the post is about they're more likely to click. This is a nice way of teasing your readers without putting up your content.
